Scaling & Root Planing

In the earliest stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, more frequent in-office teeth cleanings and better at-home hygiene may be adequate to completely renew your oral health. However, if we’re unable to halt the progression of gum disease in the less severe stage, you may develop the advanced form of gum disease known as periodontitis. At this stage, periodontal disease begins to break down the soft tissues and supportive alveolar bone tissues that anchor your teeth to the jawbone. To renew your health at this stage, we’ll need to begin with an advanced deep cleaning treatment known as scaling and root planing. Scaling is the systematic removal of plaque and tartar buildup. Root planing is the smoothing of tooth roots below the gum line to prevent future buildup. Following this initial deep cleaning, you’ll need to visit our office three or four times each year for professional maintenance teeth cleanings to prevent any future periodontal disease.

Antibiotic Therapy

In addition to deep cleaning and more frequent in-office visits, we may recommend oral or topical antibiotic therapies to reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth. Plaque is produced as a byproduct of bacteria, so by limiting the amount of bacteria, you decrease your risk for gum disease. Topical antibiotics are typically applied directly following a cleaning, and they will reduce the amount of oral bacteria between appointments. For severe infection related to gum disease, we may prescribe an oral antibiotic prior to treatment to prevent the spread of infection.
